What is this?
Libre Geolocation is an initiative to provide a FOSS, privacy-friendly, community-driven alternative to Mozilla Location Services.
Currently there are multiple development projects part of it:
BeaconDB is building a public domain wireless geolocation database
Libreloc is an implementation of a server and client, written in Rust, at an early stage.
BeaconDB currently provides an API compatible with Mozilla Location Services that can be used on various mobile devices:
-
Android (including GrapheneOS microG LineageOS)
-
Linux mobile devices
-
Linux, Apple and Windows laptops
Privacy
Will it publish WiFi MAC addresses and SSID around me?
No. Data will be obfuscated before release and/or published in aggregated formats.
The project aims to be GDPR compliant and avoid privacy leaks like in this research paper.
